Is there anyway to bypass the Neutral Safety Switch on a 92 4.0?

 

what are you trying to accomplish?

 

The occasional not wanting to start in park and reverse lights not working. I took it off to to take it apart and clean it and it looked like someone else had allready tried that and pryed on the back of it to get it off and cracked the plastic housing.

 

I have the same exact problem. I would like to know how to fix it as well.

Yes, only two black wires from switch... It is on the passenger side just above the pan. You do not have to remove it from the tranny but it does give you a bit more room to work if you do. One wire is solid black and the other is black with a yellow stripe. Just splice them above the switch and you will completely bypass the neutral section of the switch. My friends also did the same thing about two weeks ago and we did the same thing to his and both are fine. Hope that helps.

 

Hope you folks understand that the NSS does more than just prevent starting while in gear.

The range selector signal also goes through the NSS. This signal is needed to allow for proper shifting of your electronically shifted tranny.

 

x2 on what frankz said. It is not a good idea to bypass the NSS. you could begin to have tranny problems and will might start acting funny. like shifting in and out of gears along with possibly losing overdrive at times. also it's a safety issue. in my opinion its always good to just repair then remove something.

I'm bypassing mine, its a 97 strictly offroad trailered everywere never sees over 20mph

 

i have a haynes manual and looked at various other sources and for some reason my NSS won't come out...haynes says to take out the 12mm adjusting bolt and then the retaining nut & washer and then it should slide out. it wiggles but wont come out... i noticed that in installation you haveto disconnect the shift linkage on the opposite side of the tranny...is this true? and if so, how do i remove the 'u-shaped cable adjusting clamp'? so far diagrams havent helped, i dont see any u-shaped anything on the shift linkage off the tranny...

 

No you do not need to disconnect the shift linkage.
PB Blaster and gently pry with a screw driver.

 

so i pryed it, GENTLY, and the NSS slides out about a centimeter, it wont go any farther, ive sprayed it with WD40 but thats as far as it will come out...i tryed prying again but it feels like i need way too much force than whats called for (i dont wanna break anything inside the tranny)...should i keep prying or is there a secret to this? the NSS slides out very easily the first centimeter and then wont budge any farther

"Next you'll need to pull the NSS off the tranny. It's rather stubborn, and you can't 'twist' it off -- it's got to come straight off. Using a great tip I got from the JeepsUnlimited Cherokee forum, I threaded the retainer nut back on a couple of turns, then used a flat head screw driver to carefully pry the NSS off, using the lip of the tranny pan for leverage. This worked like a champ and didn't damage the unit"

You won't break anything inside the tranny. Try pushing it back and forth on the shaft, it'll come off eventually.
