do not ever by pass this switch un less it is for just a couple of second the compressore need oil in it to lubricate itself fix the leak or charge and fill when needed your compressor will self distruct if this is bypased with out freon and oil in system no if ands or buts just my 2c worth .

 

i had an old '88 that had the same problem, i disconnected the AC pump, and bypassed the switch (for now) to get the electric fan going so it doesn't overheat anymore, according to what my dad said, when the switch is set to Defogger it should override the electric fan and just run it, but for some odd reason it isn't quite working correctly, and the electric fan wont come on unless the AC is charged.... i'm thinking about in the future putting a larger late model radiator out of a '94 or later that had the High Output 4.0 in it for better cooling and do away with the "closed" cooling system it has, i think the previous owner did something horrible to the electrical under the dash... and i'm kinda nervous about yanking the dash apart considering the state the fuse box was in when i got it, and thanks for posting the pic of its location there 4.3L XJ, mine was covered in dirt and old rust colored water so it was well 'camouflaged', thanks for the help so far guys
