Default Hot transmission, shifting funny from OD to 3rd on hwy

tranny started shifting funny on the hwy in southern ut on a trip to vegas. shifting from OD down to 3rd and back when going down a slight hill. Got worse the farther I drove, Like it couldnt decide what gear it wanted to be in. Shifting from OD to 3rd and back and forth w the slightest change in pressure on the gas pedal or change in incline. Noticed ALOT of heat coming into the cabin from the floor and center console around tranny, never noticed this before. After we stopped for a few hrs, shifted normaly for 50-60 mi then started acting up again. drained fluid and refilled to make sure correct level. again shifted fine for 60 mi then started acting up. Problem seemed worse and more pronounced while in NV where air temps were 100+ than at higher cooler elevation here in Park City.
Could the coolant not be circulating and getting too hot and causing this? Or something else. I'm going to check the TCS cause I get hesitation sometimes after starting but it doesnt seem like a throttle issue. Any ideas would help!

When mine did that it was the Transmission VSS (vehicle speed sensor). Replaced it and no more OD kicking in & out constantly after it warmed up.

What fluid did you fill with? The correct stuff is Dexron III/Mercon, sold as D/M. ATF+4 is known to cause shifting issues and slippage.

What condition was the stuff that came out?

Give this a spin: https://www.cherokeeforum.com/f2/free-quick-fix-41821/

Also look on here for a writeup on testing your TPS. tjwalker has a great one that's been posted a lot.

I will have to check the VSS ( once i find it). I used the d/m fluid. not the +4. the manual recomended dex II so I used a Dex/Merc VI which said it covered Dex II. I've adjusted the throttle cable again but i did that last summer when I replaced the head gasket so no slack there. I need to get an analog voltage meter so I can test TCS properly. Hopefully its that or the VSS and not something more expensive. Thanks!

Dex IV is the last compatible fluid with the AW4. Dex V and successors are too thin, like ATF+4
