Default hitch question

Would a Mopar grand Cherokee hitch 94 to 01 style fit my 96 XJ? There is one on Craigslist. Pretty cheap and in good shape. Would any one know it it would fit at all? Even slight modifications? Any info would be great. Thanks.

Ok thanks. Appreciate the help. It's only $50. Can't hurt to try it.

Well I am going to look at it today. Picking it up if fits. It looks the same as a Cherokee one. But we will see. If anyone has any experience with these let me know. Thanks.

it will hang lower than an XJ hitch but will work. You do have to expand a couple bolt holes to bolt up. You can get XJ hitches from the Junkyard for $20-50, including hardware and wiring.

I paid $29 for the wiring, hitch, and a vac line I needed. And it was a drawtite. The hitch was 29 and they gave me the rest of the stuff

Ya I havnt been to any of the close junk yards yet. But a guy I work with has an XJ as well and says most of the xjs around here in the junk yards have no hitch or anything good worth taking. Plus the one closest to me he said is expensive. But this one looks like it will work fine. All I need is the wiring. Around here a hitch used or new aren't cheap. And finding one for an XJ is pretty hard. So I jumped on this one. Last one I almost bought was for an XJ but the guy wanted 100 bucks. And new I can buy one for a little over 100. So 50 bucks for a good looking hitch with no rust ain't bad in my eyes. It's a Mopar one too. That's a plus.

With ANYTHING like this (recovery/towing), all the hardware SHOULD be replace. In our cherokees, depending on if you had the orig/ towing package or not, have one nut strip in the right frame rail. The nuts in the nut strip are M12-1.75. However, depending on the years and environment you run in, these nuts could be rusted out if there is nothing in them already. The left side, bolts and washer need to be fished and bolts go on the underside of the frame. If the nut strip is rusted out, you need to get a new one or make one. The bolts needed need to be ATLEAST class 10.9 (metric) or Grade 8 (American Standard) JCR Off-road makes a good nut strip IF you need one. If you have any questions PM seeing as though I just fought this battle myself.

Well all I have is the hitch. No hardware. But I work at a shop and can get some there or down the road somewhere. I may call Mopar up and see if they have a set I can buy. But I will need to clean up the frame and see how the threads look. Will probably need to clean them up too.

Mopar won't. I already tried. It will cost you like $7 for good hardware

Remember, depending on the nut strip m12-1.75 ( i got ones that are two inches long) with class 10.9 rating

The Jeep dealer my Dad works for could get them, but they were like $50. Would rather get a set through JCR for cheaper..
