Sounds like your starter may have suffered from the 2nd pothole you hit. Running the starter when the Jeep's already running is bad for it. The engine spins faster than the starter, so it could have become damaged, such as (someone correct me if I'm wrong) broken starter teeth

Ok... So what it sounds like now is you had a short to ground on the hot cable from your battery. Now you may not be getting enough amps to the starter to make it turn over and as fast as it should. Replace the positive cable and you might be good to go.

To follow-up, the Jeep was in the shop for a day this week. They rebuilt the starter - the teeth, and replaced the cables. Total - $105 USD. They reworked some of the wiring to prevent that sort of thing from happening again. To be honest - I'm not sure the Jeep has ever sounded better when starting.
