u-joint bearings everywhere!!!
All,
I am replacing U-joints and 1 of the caps went in crooked. As I tapped out to reinsert, I noticed that it's a mess in there (see pic). Should I purchase a new U-joint? Take back this one and replace? Is there a way to fix this one?
Thoughts?

As long as the pins aren't beat up or bent you can place them back into position. This happened to me the other night, and as long as you do it calmly you can get them back in place in under 2 minutes. An old timer tip a Sea Bee taught me was once they are in place, put a little grease on your pinky and coat the pins. Dont pack em full but you can use a fair amount. This will help keep them in place when you are putting them on.

when i replace u-joint, the first cap i push a bit further in so the other end of the u-joint will stick out further on the other side to get the cap with the pins in easier and then push the cap in while the other one on the other end automatically comes backing out and usually just ends up right where it should be.
its a bit tricky, the grease tip is handy like buttstripe said. if the pins are bent i would get a new u-joint and you can use the old (3 new ones) as back up incase it happens again

Some of the rods (bearinsgs) were broken. I pulled rods from the old U-joint that were straight and repacked with grease.... frezered the ends for an hour and the whole project seemed easier.

I should have only replaced one. One was rusted and the bearings blew out like dust. The other was still serviceable But since I had it out and I bought 2. I replaced with new. I used rods from good u-joint. Only about 6 or 7.

I wouldn't have done that. Besides the mixed pins being a possible problem, if you hit it hard enough to break a bunch there are probably other pins that are damaged and the cap is also likely damaged. Inspect that joint often as it'll probably be the first to go bad. Might take a very long time, might take one drive.
