I always wanted a Jeep Cherokee. Not only for their performance, but because they look good. They called it slab-sided and boxy, but that was huge part of its charm - and made thoroughly recognizable as JEEP.
Like the other most recognizable Jeep Model, the Wrangler, the Cherokee looks as at home out in the wilderness as it does in the most upscale neighborhood. And unlike most other compact SUV's, it was far more than just a pretty face.. it had game.
It was a huge mistake to end its run. It's numbers where still good, it still sold well, it was - and is - still popular. When any given platform is working well, both in looks and performance, stick with it. And when it comes to something as popular as the Cherokee, the worse thing they could do is radically change it - in looks or otherwise. Never do that to any popular or iconic design! And if they want to change it, at least make it recognizable from its old form. (I'm only thankful they didn't give the Liberty the Cherokee name - they look like hell).
The Cherokee was such a huge success for Jeep. It is the best compact utility vehicle ever created - BRING IT BACK!

having wheeled a stock cherokee and stock liberty i would rather take the stock liberty offroad. however after modification its a no-brianer, with the cherokees solid front axle, its going to be way better on the trail. not to mention the aftermarket support is huge. people need to remember the majority of the market is not geared towards enthusiast. the liberty is by far more consumer friendly on the road then the cherokee. Jeep knows this and is going to do what sells the most vehicles for them.
