High Beam Switch?

Default High Beam Switch?

Hello I have a 97 Cherokee that has been giving me fits with the high beams. The low beams work fine. But when you turn on high beams (push the **** away from you) the headlights turn off. But if you pull the **** towards you to just flash them the high beams turn on. The high beams also turn on when you turn the right turn signal on. I've replaced the switch 5 times..... 4 from Auto Zone and 1 from Napa hoping to get a different manufacturer. Any ideas here? I'm pulling my hair out. I've checked fuses and I don't see a need to replace the bulbs because they turn on when you pull the switch towards you.

Thanks

Bizarre. One wouldn't think you've have gotten 5 bad switches in a row unless they're giving you the wrong part for some reason.
Any sign of damage at the connector or wiring?

The wiring at the switch looks good. I've also wiggled and moved the wires around coming out of the switch and had no change. Could a missing ground coming off the switch cause this? I'm not sure what each of the 4 wires coming out of the switch does.

Okay just to be clear since you mixed some words: are you replacing the **** on the dash or the arm on the steering column?

Here's some stuff I have saved for the main lights.

If you don't see anything visually wrong under the dash (driver's side is the most alluring to troublemakers, I find) then I'd check out the junction block. Yank all the fuses mentioned in 8W-50-5. Jam a multimeter in fuse 3 or 16 and see if it sees voltage when you hit the turn signal indicator

I am replacing the arm on the steering column. I just finished replacing the switch for the 6th time and this one works like a charm... I must have the worst luck in the world. Thank you all for the help. Just as a FYI 4 bad switches were from Auto Zone unsure of their manufacturer. The other problem child was from Napa manufactured by Echlin. The working switch is from Napa manufactured by ProFormer. Thanks so much for the help all. I've used this forum for a long time and this is my first time posting.

All the same part number? I knew the aftermarket stuff has been getting bad, but I think you win the prize. My personal best is just 2 bad parts in a row.
Glad you got it fixed.
