Default hey guys im new here, got questions about my 95 cherokee country

hey guys im new here and semi new to jeeps. i got a 95 jeep cherokee country auto tranny,4x4. its all stock.212,xxx miles
it sat for a little while maybe 7 monthes.
iv done most of the maintence on it so far.

then i noticed my rear end was leaking!!

so i went to advanced auto and was taking to a guy there that had a 95 just like mine but lifted and all that.
he took a look at mine and its a 10 bolt pattern crysler rear end. i think?
now its leaking out where the drive shaft fits. so i got the seal, gear oil and the shabang.

now the only problem i got is iv never done this to a vehicle before!!

i got a haynes manual
what steps do i need to do to get the job done?
does the rear end have to come out from under the jeep to fix this?

my impression is pop off the u joint pull the driveshaft out then take off the rear cover let the gear oil drain, put on new seal and gasket and fill where is my fill cap loacted on the rear end also??

thanks

The axle can stay in for all this... if your replacing the input seal (like it sounds) you will need to unbolt the rear u-joint, then remove the big nut holding the other 1/2 of the yoke to the axle. The wheels will have to be on the ground, or use an impact wrench. Then you should be able to pry out the old seal and replace it. Instillation is the reverse of removal. As for the diff cover, my 97 has a rubber plug in the cover....pop it out and that's where you will fill her from. Being over 200k I highly recommend using a 50/50 mix of gear oil and lucas heavy duty oil stabilizer. My XJ has 160k and the rear end was howling and growling when I bought the jeep, I did the 50/50 mix and it considerably quieted the noise. Hope this helps you out.
