hesitation, cuts out, while driving
87 renix cherokee, 4.0 auto.*
Started to notice a slight hesitation when first accelerating a couple days ago. Nothing real bad. Then drove home from work, parked it couple hours, when I left to pick up kids from school, hesitation and engine cut out was so bad I could not drive it on the highway. Starts and idles fine, just cuts out badly while driving. First thought was fuel pump or filter, so replaced both, no change. Checked MAP sensor, bad readings, replaced it, and now seems to be worse. Started it to let it idle, it ran for a few seconds and died. Starts right back up, but dies intermittently at times. Checked coil, tested good. Any advice or recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Also... after fuel pump and filter replaced, I test drove around block, started out good, could tell it was not completely fixed, but not bad, but by the time I got back home, it was consistently cutting out and sputtering. Still idles fine and revs fine in park.

See if the fuel pump ballast resistor by the air cleaner has tight fitting connections.
If you feel inclined, you can bypass it as it's only there to reduce fuel pump noise.

That said, if it were me, I would click on the link in my signature and do the free and easy things outline in posts 1 through 5 before replacing anything.

Thanks for the info cruiser, I will be doing 1 thru 5 in the morning, and hoping that they will cure my problem. No bare spots that I could find freegdr, although once inawhile, my xj wont start, just cranks, after unplugging and plugging back in the cps, she starts right up. More reasons to clean connectors like cruiser suggestion I suppose. Will keep updating.

Do all the things on Cruiser's post-grounds are a big problem-I had that same issue and I could get the Jeep to cut out idleing if I jiggled the wiring harness. Also check to see if the CPS wire is shorted to the block somewhere. It needs to be routed well away from anything hot. Ask me how I know!

The CPS could be causing this cut out problem? I thought it would cause a start or no start issue, never crossed my mind that it could cause this issue. Im in globe/miami.

Well, got a little busy yesterday, wasnt able to do everything. But I was able to do 1 and 2 on your list, and my xj is back to normal. Thank you cruiser for the insight and information. I willbe adding it to my favorites for future reference.
