which oil filter do you have on it. that is the only thing that will affect your oil capacity at this point.

Just an odd thought... Any chance the dipstick came loose from the handle? Maybe making it longer that it should be? Like the metal part slipping out of the yellow piece?

Has the engine been rebuilt? I know you said the dipstick is right but there is a possibility that the tube has been damaged and shortened.

All 4.0's take 6. So unless like stated above you may have a massive sludge build up in the pan

Ever use pensoil? Worst oil ever
If the dipstick is all good pull the vc and see if its sludgy. Pulling the pan isn't hard either.

Pennzoil uses paraffin wax. Causes sludge build up.

Bad misinformation. Many brands of oils use a paraffinic base; it is actually a good thing. It has nothing to do with paraffin wax.

Any oil with SL, SM, or SN rating is good quality. No such thing as a bad oil, if it has one of those ratings. Oil today is light years ahead of oil even 20 years ago.

+1

It isn't 1970 anymore. That old wive's tale was started by Pennzoil's competitors who used different base stocks and it kinda stuck around.
Mobil 1 picked up a bad name early on too, for the same reason. Competitors throwing you-know-what at the wall, hoping it stuck. Sometimes it does.
Those old "waxy" Pennzoil/Quaker state base oils are used now by Brad Penn, oddly enough a very highly respected oil.
