Too lean, not enough fuel, if its carberated, the float might be stuck, if it's fuel injected check the coponents for carbon build up or pump for any problems, you can do a good diagnostic with a manual and a multimeter, but i would check with cleaning it first, its starving for gas!

I agree!!

Sounds like a fuel delivery issue to me. Gearheadette is steering you in the right direction.

Out of curiosity does it stay on in park? (or neutral?) can you smell gas out of the exhaust?

change air filter, clean the fuel injectors/carb?

Had the same prob it was the small resistor on the inner fender next to the air box I replaced the pump, relay, filter and the regulator nothing worked, then checked the resistor and it was burnt in half replaced it $6.00 at napa worked great ever since.
