Exclamation HELP! Tcase stuck in 2 hi

91 xj auto 4wd. For some reason i cannot switch into four high, or four lo. I dunno if possibly one of the bushings are blocking the shifter? I looked under the jeep and to my knowledge, it looks normal. Maybe a little play in the linkage, but that's about it. I was just wondering if someone has any help trouble shooting, or is there a way i can switch it manually from under the vehicle? All help is appreciated. Thanks!!

Disconnect the linkage and see if you can operate the transfer case manually. If it still won't budge you will have to open it up and take a look.

Are you trying to shift it sitting still?

Here's how the factory suggests you shift the transfer case and I've been doing this since these things were new and I worked at the dealership. Quoted from the owner's manual.

"To engage, shift the transfer case lever from 2H to 4H while the vehicle is moving at any legal speed". I let off the gas, throw the lever, and then tap the gas and let off.

4L position: " To engage, slow the vehicle to 2-3 MPH , shift the transmission to Neutral, then shift the transfer lever to the right and pull firmly rearward to 4L".

I have been coming to a complete stop before shifting, into four hi and four lo. I had no idea you could switch while moving, especially at speed! I just wonder if shifting the way i have been, has the potential to cause this problem..Maybe of i try to do it the right way it will free up, i will give it a shot today and see if it budges. Thank you for your help friend :-)
