help with rear fender trimming.

Well trying to find the best wayto trim my rear fenders. Any one have suggestions

93XJLI 01-13-2009 11:59 PM

cut up to the pinch weld, then fold over.

MasterShakeXJ 01-14-2009 08:21 AM

i think the cut and fold method does prove to be the best b/c you cant trim a lot in the rear. ends up lookin good too.

99XJDad 01-14-2009 10:33 AM

Hate to hijack, but I was wondering the same thing. I don't recall seeing a writeup on here has any detail on exactly how to do the "cut and fold" for the rear (correct me if I'm wrong). I understand the concept but some pictures would be nice.

lifted93xj 01-16-2009 08:37 PM

so does a dremel work for cutting the fenders

XJ?2010 01-16-2009 08:39 PM

It would take you a long time and a lot of wheels

claygrassmann 01-16-2009 08:41 PM

it prolly could i kno there is another thread on here that a guy used tin snips to do it. i just cut mine up a lil bit today and my angle grinder went thru them like a fish thru water. but you can pick up angle grinders from tsc for like 30 bucks and its totally worth it. im sure that sometime soon im gonna be gettin another!

lifted93xj 01-16-2009 08:44 PM

Yea i have a angle grinder but i was just wondering because i think the cut would be more precise but i think a grinder will do.

fahrenheit 01-16-2009 09:00 PM

im actually cutting the front and put rear TJ flare....

its gonna be cut and fold+ rear TJ flare at the back for me

lifted93xj 01-16-2009 10:07 PM

im going flareless i think it looks sicker.

fahrenheit 01-17-2009 07:26 AM

actualy its my daily drive. with 10 inche rim the tire get a litle too wide for the police of my area ( if more than 1 inch outside the flare they begin to get hungry )

that why i must keep some kind of flare....

Cut the bulk with a whiz wheel, then grab the Av. snips and make relief cuts all around, then fold in, hammer & dolly down, prime, paint and call it a day. Add rubber trim if you want.

lifted93xj 01-17-2009 10:06 PM

as long as you are careful and take your time the angle grinder should work really well for you

lifted93xj 01-19-2009 12:22 AM

Cut my fenders and they came out really good

JeepCoMJ 01-19-2009 12:36 AM

here's one I did for scorpion automotive before he closed down. in a roundabout way it made it's way back to me so now it sits, an empty, rust-free heavily modified shell (anyone need a nice xj shell?)

lifted93xj 01-19-2009 12:47 AM

thats alot more welding then i wanted to do man. i like the cut and fold it came out with the probly pretty close to the same clearence as you did.

JeepCoMJ 01-19-2009 05:29 AM

mm. not really, I ended up fitting a 33x12.50 tire stock with ZERO rubbing anywhere. but yes, the cut and fold is quite a bit easier.

Are those the stock flares on there, or are they from a TJ or something?

to me they look too round to be XJ flares, so my guess is that they are from a TJ

lifted93xj 01-20-2009 07:10 AM

They look good

95greenxj 01-20-2009 07:13 PM

are you guys doing the cut and fold on the front and back?

i want to go flareless and i got the rear covered.. but not sure about the front

fahrenheit 01-20-2009 08:07 PM

http://images45.fotki.com/v1423/phot...MGP1586-vi.jpg

lifted93xj 01-20-2009 09:31 PM

no just cut the front man and cut/fold the back

fahrenheit 01-20-2009 09:40 PM

the rear gonna be cut and fold of course

95greenxj 01-20-2009 10:24 PM

ok... is it possible to just take the bumperettes off the bumper to have excess to cut the fender below the headlight bucket instead of dropping the whole bumper... or would it just be easier to drop the whole bumper?:dunno:

lifted93xj 01-20-2009 10:32 PM

its all up to you man. I didnt do either just nice and slow around the bumper

95greenxj 01-20-2009 10:51 PM

i wonder if i could take a sharpie and trace the top of the fender all the way around and use that as a cut line...
