If you look along the rails that are attached to the roof, you'll notice holes every so often on the outside of the rails. Those holes will lead you to some torx head screws. I am unsure of the size, but they are not big. If you remove them, there will be holes in your roof that will need to be addressed. HTH!!

The 2 load bars just unscrew with the thumb screws, and then you will have just the 2 sides. Its pretty easy. If you need more help I'll send ya pics.

This pertains to the WJ roof rails, but the xj might be similar.http://www.wjjeeps.com/crossrails.htm

loosen the two bars so you can slide them to front or rear...at each end of racl there are a cap in front of that caps is a torx bolt, remove that take caps pff and slide them off....then put the caps back on... takes 10 mins

The release for the load rails changed with different years. Your 90 has the screw down fasteners as does my 89, however my 91 has a push button release.

i ended up taking off both of the bars that go across and both the panels that go along each side of the roof and just put the screws back in to keep the rain out. i prefere no rack on the roof of my xj since most xj's iv seen keep the racks on them and i want a little change for mine
