Default Help please!

Ok so I started up my xj and it will not go down from high Rpms it sound as if I am flooring the pedal and when I put it in drive I don't need to push the pedal to move and I can go about 20 mph without my foot on the gas!!

Any ideas what this could be?

Thanks Jordan

check the throttle cable and return spring on the throttle body for binding first. if thats not it, it could be a vacuum leak. you can pull the vaccum elbow on the fuel pressure regulator and if the rpms dont change theres a vacuum leak some where. good luck

Sounds like a vacuum leak. Have you unbolted the intake manifold or exhaust manifold recently? If you did and didn't replace the gasket, it could cause a vacuum leak which would cause a crazy high idle. Same goes for the throttle body. One way to check for a vacuum leak is to spray some carb clean around the manifold and throttle body and if the idle raises, there's a leak. It's very important that you do this with the engine cold because the exhaust manifold could set the carb clean on fire. Also, it's a good idea to have a fire extinguiser nearby in case of a backfire.

could be carbon buildup in the carburetor as well which could cause some stickiness

since it moves on it own. try and pull the pedal back towards you? maybe its stuck down a little. then check the cable and then check all leaks. but start in neutral. so u dont go flying.!!!!!!!
