New jeep (to you)? You'll get more responses here with a little background info. Most people want to help and love a challenge. Hey need to know what you got, and what you did.

Did you do a tune up? Did you do cruiser54s tips? Clean up the engine bay and grounds? It'll last forever, however, the last 50 or so thousand miles before people sell it, they often don't do ANY maintenance. .. no oil changes, no plugs, chances are it was running rough and had issues before it got to you. That's why they sold it. Good news.... some elbow grease and you can get it right. And... it's fun!

Welcome to the forum.

PS. .. the gas smell might be the engine running "rich." Which puts in more gas then needed. Could be 1000 things. Usually, cleaning some grounds and sensors could fix it. Cheap with some hard work. Helps the engine computer figure out how to balance the mix.
Good luck .

I'm really hoping too the gas isn't leaking from the tank.

Well then start doing some noggin Pokin
. Identify the condition it happens under. Was it hot out ? Did you just drive it? Was it sitting a long time? Idling in the driveway or running down the road?

My first guess would be filler neck & the connection from the tank to the filler hole, they aren't the highest quality....
