Default help please!!?

I have an 87 XJ with a 4.0 auto, and I had a bad oil leak underneath. Rear main I suspected and I just got done changing it. I started the jeep and got good oil pressure for a few secs and then noticed it pouring out around the same spot. I am mechanically inclined and was wondering if it is possible the pan gasket in the back didnt seat properly?? I got the one piece rubber gasket from Advance and think that is only thing that it could be, right? I know for a fact I got the rear main seal in correctly. I plan to start again in the morning, any info would help!!! Thanks

look around your oil filter adapter.

Your probably correct to suspect the rubber seal on the pan gasket. I had a firestone dealer change mine because they messed up my oil pan when changing the oil. They had to do it twice because the seal at the back of the pan did not seat properly and leaked really bad. I did not notice if the oil pressure dropped because I did not drive it off their lot. I looked under the car when they said it was done and I noticed the leak right away. I guess they figured I would'nt look?

My worst leak was from the oil filter adapter. I thought is was the rear main at first as well but I changed the o-rings in the oil filter adapter and now it doesn't leak at all. It can be deceiving as it will run down and drip in the same spot as the rear main.

My adapter leaks off and on sometimes to..For some reasons sometimes it won`t leak at all and other times it`s making a puddle..I`ve tried a couple of times to change it and was applying so much torque to the little T-Bolt holding it on I started getting scared something was going to break and stopped..I`ve seen lug nuts put on with an impact gun come off easier

But as far as the original posters question I would also assume the gasket is leaking as it happened right after changing all that

this exact thing happened to me last weekend, well sort of. I cheaped out and bought the 4 piece gasket and it is leaking really bad out of the rear area of the pan. I will be going round two on it this coming weekend with the 1 piece gasket this time.

this time I am dropping the starter to give myself a wee bit more room to work. I think I will also put the new gasket on the pan and let the RTV cure a bit longer before I put it on the motor. I dont feel so bad now that I have to do it twice since the firestone guys did the same thing

Well after a few choice of words to my jeep ( I appoligized) I was able to fix the oil pan gasket and now have it fixed, but I have noticed my valve cover bolts keep loosening up!! Anyone else have that problem? I am going to try lock washers on it and see what happens. Thanks for your input.
