help please
My son wants to buy a 1996 jeep that has 170,000 miles on it. The interior has all been replaced. The guy who sells it sells many jeeps but is not really a dealership. He wants 2800 out the door. The car has no rust/AC Works/4 wheel drive works/ locks and windows are manual.
I know NOTHING about this. How is the price? Can anyone give me any insight. This seems really expensive to me. He is leaving for college in a few days and needs good transportation. we live in Michigan.

I would try to talk him down a little bit in price but with if the PO did regular maintenance it should be good but if your that worried take it to a good mechanic and have him look it over if your not sure what your doing but on the other check the oil it should be a light brown make sure its not milky white color that could indicate a blown head gasket make sure the tranny shifts smooth check for rust make sure everything should be in working order also if the engine has a light ticking noise its common for the 4.0 they all have a ticking noise and the motor is a good they can easily run 250000 plus with proper care

You live in Michigan. You might want the 4 wheel drive. The seller might take $300-$400 less if it is a cash deal.

2800 is high for a 96. 2k is probably about all I would pay, and that would be for a 96 in extremely good condition, with a history of maintenance that I could believe.

He's got to be figuring on $ 2500.00. If it's in good condition then grab it. Good for a kid in college. Safe, reliable, easy to work on, fun, and yes they typically see 275,000 miles before needing a new motor.
