96 stock, and quiet.Lifted it and it exasperated an issue in the rear diff. Thought it might of been the driveline noise people spoke about. Took it in for diagnostic, rear gears were bad. Just something else you might want to look at. It too was a D35.

What did you need to do to repair your diff, or did you just swap it out for a replacement used part?

I am part way through changing all my UJ's, but I have yet to find any obvious faults on the old ones, so am now concerned it may be diff related.

Many thanks

It was gonna cost $350 since I can't do gears my self... Proper shimming. So I picked up a D44 from an older Xj for $450

Do we all have a slip yoke? If so what does it look like?
Mine makes a sort of creaking/grumble noise...its really hard to put it into words.

the yoke on the end of your factory rear drive shaft, the one that slides onto the splines of the transfercase, my splines were dry, regreased them and all sorts of noises went away

Oh, maybe not too likely but awfully easy test. Got a curvy road where you can do decent speed, 50ish (MPH)? It's pretty common, a wheel bearing sound will change as you go into a turn, then come out and maybe go the other way. You get the idea, and hey name another test that is actually fun!

Also if the sound changes accelerating/decelerating, you might want to go ahead and check/change that differential oil, have a look in there.

I think its either a prop shaft UJ or rear diff issue.

I am also wondering if it might be a lack of additive in the rear diff.

Anyone know the symptoms of this?
I changed the diff oil (Castrol Syntrax 90w-140) and added Torco LSD modifier 4oz. Got both from ebay
Went for a long drive about 20miles and no binding. I am 99% sure this has sorted my problem. Well pleased!

Excellent news! I finished changing my UJs today but have yet to take it for a long run. Have just ordered the LSD modifier you used and am going to change the diff oils next weekend. I've just been looking on eBay for the castrol syntax. Is your oil 90w-140, as I can only see 75w-140 listed?

Thanks

Sorry, it was the 75W-140 from a guy in Neath(Wales). Came next day as did the additive.
Best to warm up the oil first by running it then take off the cover with a tray to catch the old oil (good for chainsaw). Bolts are 13mm on the Dana.

Good luck with yours

Hi all, i 2 have the same set of noises and clunking in my 97 jeep limited. I have also changed out uj's, wheel bearings, diff oil,and seals. I also cannot determine whether it is a diff issue or transmission bearing. are there any good write ups that some one knows of for transmission bearing replacement.

Being that you are post 29...you might want to start new...I don't want to read all the other 28 myself! There might be some stuff in the transfer case that's serviceable, generally a bad diff is a reason to head for the JY...good luck!
