Note from DJ
The only emissions light that ever came on was controlled by the maintenance timer. It was just a simple clock motor; it just tracks the hours that the engine hand been running; at approximately 2750 hours of operation it turned on the light. It was a one-use only timer that could not be reset and its only purpose was to signal when the O2 sensor should be replaced. It was decided that it was not required piece of junk and it was OK to just remove the bulb for forever.
87-90 Renix Jeeps do not throw codes.

I had an 80s Mazda pickup that had a similar "maintenance" light that came on at 60K and 120K miles. The light was off when I bought it with 90K on it, but it came on right on schedule when I hit 120K. The user manual said that when that light came on, your dealer service department would reset it using special tools after they performed the required maintenance.

The "special tools" were their hands. There were actually just a couple of connectors in the wiring harness under the dash. When the 60K light came on, you just pulled the 60K connector apart. Then when the 120K light came on, you just disconnected the 120K connector. Then you just left them hanging from then on.

Back then the internet was in its infancy, so there was no way for most people to find this out. I found it because I called a dealership, told them I did my maintenance myself and asked how much they would charge to turn that stupid light off. I think it was normally $120, so I told the guy I would just pull the instrument cluster out and remove the bulb myself. He said, "Don't bother with that, it's just a connector" and told me where to find it. Sure enough, when I got under there, the 60K connector had already been disconnected, and pulling the 120K connector fixed it.

It kind of pissed me off at Mazda. The whole thing was completely dishonest, bordering on fraud. All the young guys who don't remember what life was like before the internet don't realize how much **** like this companies pulled that they can't get away with any more.
