I wonder if he used synthetic b/c that's what the new engine paperwork suggested (??).

At this point I would probably keep using synthetic. Synthetic oil, depending on what he used is a better lubricant anyway, so it probably has the same effect as higher zinc. But now that you uttered the words "Motor Oil" yer going to get two dozen different opinions by the self-anointed "Internet Oil Experts". Soon this thread will resort to guys correcting each other, then spiral into name calling ...just like most oil threads do on automotive forums. Ha ha...

Don't sweat it, as long as you are using a good oil and change it at maybe 1000 miles, I would not worry about it. If you wanted to add a break in additive for the mileage until you do the next oil change, go ahead.

I ran synthetic in my Comanche right after the rebuild, and it had a lot of ticking going on, swapped to 10w-30 t4 and it quieted down a lot.

ok cool. then i wont worry about it. also noticed my my drain plug has a small drip. im assuming at some point the threads in the pan got stripped. any good ways to help this? i dont really want to replace the whole pan just yet. self tapping bolt? im nervous about using like a teflon tape or locktite or anything like that...

If it's like a drip a day or something I wouldn't worry about it. Your drain plug might be missing a crush washer or rubber gasket causing the leak

its a 3 -4 drips every time i shut off the engine. and it has a brand new rubber piece. When tightening the bolt it gets snug and then if you do one more 1/4 turn once it's snug it'll become loose again. my fear is that road vibs will rotate it slowly to become un-snug and then the plug may fall out... i worry alot. but i have terrible luck with cars lol

Check the condition next oil change. Use a bit of Permatex White #2 (doesn't get brittle) on the threads next time.

No, that one is compatible with oil. However, don't glob it on past the threads. Just put it on the threads and when you screw it in, it will be wiped OUT and visible on the outside of the pan.

It is good to use on the oil sender too, if the sender does not already have a sealer on the threads.
