Default Help Needed

New to the forum and New to working on my Jeep, normall woring on a 1600 MK Escort.....a far cry from the Jeep.

We have a 98 4ltr auto Cherokee. Great Car but has given us no ends of problems with water, radiator, overheating, aircon probs and we have probably spent about 10k on repairs and now we have a tranny problem.

At cruising speed 100k after its warm (20 mins of driving) it suddenly drops "out" of gear and revs highly. after cooling and driven gently it runs fine.

We have changed fluid, but is still doing it....is there anything else I can do before its time to take it to the trans shop?

I am a complete novice but handy, any links to diagrams or pics etc or if anyone else has suffered similar problems would be greatly appreciated.

This is the EXACT problem I've been having. I posted a couple days ago about it. So far I haven't found a solution, the only thing I have narrowed it down to, is that it is the torque converter unlocking. I bet if you take it on a nice highway trip you'll eventually get a nice smoke cloud behind you too. If you figure this one out, please let me know. I'll do the same.

guys it may be one of 2 things:

1)bad torque converter

2)bad clutches in the trans

my buddy had this problem (not in a jeep) and thats what it turned out to be. hope this helps.

I pulled the fuse for the TCU and drove it in 'standard' mode for a day now, and the tranny goes through 1, 3, and 4 fine. Driving it in this mode I can't select second, but that isn't an issue. I've got it narrowed down to something with the torque converter. I read on a different problem about a similar problem that turned out to be the Torque Converter Clutch Valve Body and Solenoid. I'm trying to locate an O/H Kit for a decent price to clean out the valve body.

Default How to troubleshoot AW4 Tranny

There is a way to check the linkage on the tranny. See link.
When it pops out is it under similar conditions?
Like when you hit a bump, go up a hill, take your foot out of the gas? If you can't remember take it out and try a few things. Get your foot into the gas and let off it quick. It may be the other things that have been posted but lets start with the "cheap" things first.
