yea thats my general rule of thumb but the tire industry is pushing to have new tires put on the rear (and although there is some truth to that especially if tires are bald or very poor the oversteer may be to much to handle for some people and it's easier to compensate for tires that people can control through steering) i believe it has more to do with selling more tires, front tires wear more (because they do more work usually unless an alignment is screwed up) and since they are now saying the better tires belong on the rear they are in essence prohibiting rotations on most cars which further increases wear and the customer is forced to buy new tires prematurely due to lack of rotation and being told to put them on the rear putting the old ones up front and continuing the cycle.
