One of the biggest tools in a technicians box is the ability to locate information and use it. Further the reason I told her to check for spark is that is the correct place to start when diagnosing a no start condition. I figured she didn't have a DRB to check it via the computer so I told her how to do it with what I figured she had. Since the ASD relay controls power to the coil and swapping it caused the jeep to start there are several possibilities. One the connection in the relay center was corroded and the swap cleaned the connections enough to make things work. Two the ASD relay is on the verge of failure but the jarring caused by swapping it caused the relay to start working. There is also another interesting twist that may be involved. I like to call it the unrelated concern effect. The alternator may actually have been bad thus causing the initial symptoms. Then the ASD which was on the verge of failure conked out at the same time. This is one of the hardest issues for a technician to deal with as they tend to have tunnel vision and get hung up on the obvious problem in this case the burning smell and weird flickering lights right before the vehicle died. So it is no wonder that folks who may not be professional technicians would have issues with it.
This is an interesting article because it states the the ASD RELAY is directly correlated with a no start issue when connected to the malfunctioning of the 02 Sensor which Free and I recently diagnosed needing replacement. Mmmm.

Since you already have the parts, just replace them. Also as stated those relays are cheap (14-18 bucks depending on where you shop) so replace those as well. As for your buzzing sound you heard, that might have been the relay malfunctioning (A relay is a switch that controls high current by using low current) When certain metals have current applied to them they resonate/vibrate. Have you ever stood under high voltage power lines and heard that buzzing? Thats the cables vibrating cause of the current. Same concept, smaller scale. The relay was the reason it refused to shut off after you got her started as well. It basically "switches" the power on at startup and kills the power at shutdown.
Sorry for the long post but this is part of the learning process, trial, error learn why xxx part failed. So far, you've done great.

Thanks and I don't mind long posts. Very informative but is there a way to test the ASD Relay with a multimeter or do I have to have a scan tool?

Also it's not a buzzing sound but more of a rough start for a few seconds. Sounds like my old lawnmower

There is a way to test them with the multimeter. Your Service Manual will walk you through it. Me, I just replace them cause they're cheap.

Yup you need new plugs (;

That might have a fair bit to do with the long crank/ hard starting.

Fuel filter is underneath the jeep on the drivers side by the back axle. Just take a flat head screwdriver and unscrew the hose clamps, remove hoses from filter and install new one in place. There is an arrow or marking on the fuel filter that should point twords the front of the vehicle.
