Hi,on my 1994 Cherokee Sport,its a 4.0 the serpentine belt its making a loud grinding kinda noise. I sprayed belt lube and it stopped for 20 seconds then went back to it. If give step on the gas it won't go away,its just constant from start to shut off. Do you think I just need a new belt? Its looking kinda shiny,does that mean its worn out? Im just a basic learn as I go working on mechanical type. I love Jeeps,owned a 95 Cherokee Sport dark green,now own a 94 Cherokee Sport dark green! haha. If ya can help me or give me some advise I would really appreciate it! Thanks

 

I would take belt off and inspect idler bearings in all the pulleys, sounds like a bad one to me.

 

Alright ill look. But I sprayed belt lube on and it stopped for like 20 seconds,so wouldent that mean its the belt,like why would the lube make the pully stop screeching if the bearing is inside?

id say ur belt is glazed over. on sale at autozone. 44.00 + tax for gatorback.

 

Could be the water pump going bad. When you sprayed the lube on it, it slipped on the water pump pulley and the grinding stopped. When my water pump went out, the impeller was grinding on the housing for abour 300 miles before the slop in the bearing caused the seal to fail. Look at all of the pulleys and check for wobble. Then pull the belt and spin all of the accesories (WP, PS, AC, Idler...) by hand to see if any feel tight. If nothing, put on a new belt and see if it gooes away.

have you gone through any mud recently or ever. I had the same thing and my problem was having mud clumped in the groves where my belt should go. So the belt was slipping and making a horrendous noise

 

Theirs no mud on them,but in my old Jeep I had a 95 Cherokee that happend to me before,made a horendus noise.

 

you could also take the belt off, start the jeep and let it run for a little (not too long, you could kill the batt, b/c you have no alt. charging it) and if the noise is gone with belt off and engine running, its 99.999% you need a belt.

Never pay over $20 for a serp belt

 

X2 on the water pump pulley. Mine was making a grinding noise when the bearing went out. Pull of the serp belt, then go over each of the pulleys with your hands and see if any of them lock up.

 

330am, just finished pulling off the belt,it wasent alligned evenly with the pulleys,it was the idler pulley. Also the belt was kinda worn,so im just gonna replace it. The belt only cost $19.99 at CAP and the Pulley is $27.99. Thanks guys for all the help! I appreciate it.

 

That pully is way too expensive for my taste. I just found the bearing that is in it for $5.50 CDN. Probably a buck for you Americans. I'll go get the part number for you.
It's a real simple job to press out the old one and press in the new.

Found it. It's made by SKF in Argentina. Part number 6203-2RSJ. I'm sure someone has a cross reference chart for Timkin if you can't find the SKF

 

my buddy has replaced his $20 belt 3 times & ive had my $44 belt on for 2yrs. his is squeeking again. bet he goes with the gatorback once he does the math.
