I recently bought a 93 Jeep Cherokee Country and was having shifting problems. I'd have to turn the motor off in order to shift in reverse and again to shift from reverse to first gear I'd have to turn the motor off -- and it would shutter and shake and die--- I took it to an old family friend who I trust somewhat with his abilities who was a professional mechanic before he retired (not Jeep)-he replaced the clutch plate, greased up what he was supposed to (that was another problem) and replaced one other thing - I forget what it was --- he brought it back to me saying he wasn't really pleased with how it was shifting but it was better than it was (after that much money, I'd hope so) -- on the way to take him back home, the Jeep died while I was driving it- right in the middle of the road! I never had that problem before.It wouldn't start. The guages would work. After sitting a while it would start but immediately quit again. After letting it sit overnight he was able to start it and drive it back to his house. As part of his initial repairs, he had to pull the transmission and take it apart. After checking with some Jeep people that are local, he was told to replace the camshaft sensor because it was more likely that than the fuel pump. I mentioned the crankshaft position sensor to him since I read online about that. He's recommended I take it to another mechanic who works on Jeeps === sure- with another huge repair bill. What do you think it might be? Thanks so much

 

it probably is the CPS (crank position sensor)

 

The #1 cause of random stalling on the 4.0 is the crankshaft position sensor.

Testing can be performed but it is not always conclusive.

If you buy one, buy it directly from your local Jeep dealership for best reliability and longevity.
