'00 XJ. 174k. I knew it would require loving care but I love driving an XJ, even a stock one. Which, at this point, mine is.

Drove it to work this morning, no problems. Break at work, wanted to run out for cigarettes. Trouble starting (have a failing starter, spare in the back - but this seemed different). Would not keep running unless accelerator depressed. Drove it out of the parking lot with one foot on each pedal but after a few minutes, ran ok, if somewhat rougher.

Then, check engine light came on. Drove fine after work tonight but light is still on.

Any thoughts?

I'm learning, so sorry if this is a stupid post/question. I'll take it Monday morning to get looked at/get hooked up to a computer. But any advice/suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Off the cuff it sounds like a vacuum leak but without knowing the codes there are too many possibilities.

 

I've seen this happen with other cars after the head gasket blew.

 

What engine codes is it throwing?

It's really hard to diagnose an engine problem without know what codes are associated with the Check Engine Light.

 

Definitely get those codes and post em up.

Having to tip in the throttle to start "can" indicate a bad throttle position sensor.

 

I'll bet he didn't want to hear that.

BUT his '00 has the infamous 0331 head.
