Do you have the exact codes (the numbers)? Sounds like one out of your two (or four if your XJ is California emissions) Oxygen sensors took a crap. They're not too hard to change.

Any time you have Oxygen Sensor (O2S) malfunction codes (CEL) always check the O2S heaters fuse in the Power Distribution Box (PDC), see pic.

If the fuse is blown replace it with the same amp value fuse.

Detach the battery negative (ground) cable from your battery for 5-10 minutes to see if the Check Engne light (CEL) goes away.

If the fuse blows again, you will need to check the O2S heater in each O2S to see if one, or both, heaters are defective.

Proceed with the fuse check and get back with the results.

when the light comes on again just run it by a parts store and have them check the code, keep it written down and let us know what it is.
