I'm sorry, I missed the part about it doing it from a fresh start. Yeah that definitely makes sense about the reluctor ring on the flywheel being messed up. Keep us updated on what happens.

See this thread. I would check the flywheel.

flex plate moving like that is bad its probably broken around all the bolt where it bolts to the crank. And yes that will definatly mess up with your cps signal get the flex plate fixed and see what happens.

Went to the j/y today. Got a good flexplate. Its from a 94 I6, will that work? Are there any differences between 94 and 98 engines?

Found some other goodies too (factory fog lights, roof rack rails, Grand cherokee console lid with rear cup holders, a new set of horns, a blower motor resister).

I would be outside putting some of this on right now but it started raining. I did get the roof rails on and the fog lights in. I'll do more tomorrow, weather permitting. But I'm gonna have to find someone to put the flex plate in for me (no trans jack, don't like laying around on gravel, and no time). Unless some of the Cherokee guys around here want to come over and help... I'll buy the beer!

Ok, so I went to drive it to work Friday evening, and it wouldn't start.
I found that the wires on the fuel pump relay had backed out. Simple fix. She runs again...
Now I was trying to get the a/c working again (it's hot in Louisiana). Everything has power going where it is supposed to, no leaks in the system. But the compressor and aux fan wouldn't come on.
I can put my test light, clipped to pos., to the white wire on the back of the a/c relay and everything comes on.
From what I can gather from the FSM, That is the ground sig. from the ECM.
My question is, Is my computer fried? Everything else is doing like I would expect, still low on power because of busted flexplate.
Anyone else delt with something like this? Any suggestions? Come on people... Please help me. I have thought about running wire and bypassing the ECM sig. with a toggle switch. My aux fan has been doing good like that for some time now. But if I could get things right, I would rather do that.

Doyou mean the blue whith white tracer wire at the relay? this wire provides power for the control side of the relay..

Possibly voltage passing through the test light turning it on?

no... mine has a solid white wire on the relay for the a/c and a solid white wire on the aux fan relay. I'm talking about under the fuse box, inside the power distribution center. I checked those two wires very carefully and they are solid white. They are factory original. Tomorrow I will get pics if needed.

I was thinking about snipping the white wire from under the box and hooking it to a toggle switch.

And also...(may be flex plate related). When I give it gas while sitting, it takes a couple seconds to respond. Could this be related to the flexplate issue? Or am I looking at something else?

I think I'd eliminate the flexplate issue before I started worrying about how it's effecting other systems/issues.

Sounds like you have plenty of other issues/projects to spend some time on (fod lights/roofbars, etc.) while you try to rustle up some help for the flexplate change.

Personally, I'd go on the southern area part of this website, where people may be a little more geographically possible to help you out. I know there have to be guys/gals down there who use that area of the site to hook up for mudding, etc. and they are usually the diehard type who might make the drive over. You might even shoot out a CL ad to ask for help. JEEPERs are always scanning for parts/etc. There might even be a BR chapter of JEEP guys/gals somewhere. Doesn't matter if it's wrangler guys, any help counts.

Keep scanning the trash for some carpet to toss on the driveway. That's what I do up here in Michigan to keep the rocks off when i'm working on my stuff.

Good luck dude, keep on keeping us posted. Have a PoBoy for me.

Default not starting

When you say won't start, do you mean that it will not turn over at all? Mine will out of the blue, usually if I haven't driven it very long (less than a mile) and turn int off.. the starter will not turn over. It was doing that a LOT and running really bad and cutting out while I was driveing until I changed the TPS. Now it runs smooth and the starter thing rarely happens but it still does. I have to open the hood and cross the starter out with a wrench to start it. (need a button attached i guess) , but I had no idea the TPS (throttle position sensor) could cause so much havoc.

No, the issue you are having sounds like the neutral safety switch. Next time it dosen't start, shift it to neutral and try it. If not, try slamming it back into park and try it again. If that works, the nss is a relative easy fix. The hardest part is lining it back up right. Especially if you are doing it by your self. There are other threads about how to do it.

Update on mine: I got the flexplate changed out. A/c working fine now. Go figure. Now the shift solenoids I hade changed before the flexplate issue have decided to crap out again. Only the 3/4 solenoid this time. Replaced the headliner. Started wiring up a remote starter/keyless entry system and realized everyone has different wiring diagrams for under the dash. So I gave up on that one.
