Was the original wiring harness intact or was it "butchered"?
If butchered....undo ALL the wires and start fresh. Making sure each connection is good.
If INTACT:
Check the inside contacts of the wiring adapter.
I had one pin get bent and pushed to the side causing the same kind of problem. Took 1hr of messing around to track it down.

On a 96 XJ the radio and dome lights are on the same fuse for sure. I actually had two fuses on mine that were affected. One was drivers side under the dash, I don't remember the number that blew and took the radio and dome light several times. After I replaced that multiple times, one time it blew and replacing the fuse did not fix it. I ended up finding the solution by replacing one of the mini-fuse under the hood on the passenger side (relay box).

yes check the fuses, blew 2 when i put in mine....but mine was hacked up pretty bad. There are still two wires that are behind there that if you touch together make all my speakers produce no sound....and i have found no other use for them than that....taped them off tho. And another thing, if the wires are all hacked then wire nuts and black tape are your friend. I ALWAYS put black tape around every wire nut i put on as well
sorry got to rambling again good luck

Replace it. The insurance company is going to total it and give you a check for its blue book value in your area, that is if it was the other drivers fault and he has insurance. The Jeep would NEVER be the same if you did fix it.
