my father in law stripped a bolt head on the hub and its tight. vice grips don't seem to work...any suggestions as to what i/we need to do to get this off???? I really appreciate any and all suggestions.

 

try some PB than the vice grips again i suppose.... i hate it when i strip bolts

 

You may have to drill it out and retap it... Must be real tight if vice grips wont get it... Are you taking about the 13mm 12point bolts that hold the hub to the knuckle? I thought mine were stripped too, until I usedthe proper tool for the job.. You cant use he standard 6point socket or the open end of a wrench you need a 12ptsocket.. IF those are the bolts you are talkin ab.. If not I just wasted some time haha

 

please explain which bolt it is.. if you have a good set of channel locks, you should try heating it up with a torch and turning it with the channel locks.

 

Wouldnt heating it up make the metal expand and make it harder??

 

weld a nut to the head

 

i have used my little wire feed welder to make a large head on the stripped bolt and use an extractor socket.
the heat from the welder should break any rust corrosion free and make it easier to get out.

i had to do it to all three on the passenger side. worked great.

 

Well we still dont know the actual bolt he is talking about I just guessed it was teh hub bolts

 

I'd heat it up, tap it with a hammer (not too hard), heat it again and then she should come out. (patience is key!).

 

not if you heat around it. but no, in most cases heat helps..

Hit it with some Liquid Wrench, then heat around it with a MAPP torch, Liquid Wrench it again, Heat again, then give these puppies a go.

No, Liquid Wrench is not flammable, it just smokes up a little bit and smells like burnt fuel. Just don't breath it in and do it in an open garage/well ventilated area.
