Did you get a scan done to see if any DTC (CEL) codes have been stored? Some codes, like P1694 and P1698 (relating to CCD Bus problems and a No Bus) may occur and not give you a CEL.

Your problem may be the crankshaft position sensor (CPS). Disconnect it and see if any changes occur. If no changes occur, it could be a bad transmission control module (TCM) or its wiring.

Could be the TPS, I have seen trannys act up because of a bad TPS. Doesnt really explain the gauges though.

so i pulled the crank sensor and the tps unplugged em both no difference im goin over here in a min to put it on code reader i talked to the previous owner they said it did it once they pulled the cluster fuse and it stopped well i tried that didn't work someone said it could be a speed sensor would that give me the no bus code? i have a feeling ima have to tear into the dash i already took all the fuses out and cleaned them i read it could be caused by a bad battery or low power but i have 2 batteries i went thru all my added electrical make shure i wasn't shorting out didn't see nothing were is the transmission control unit located at i cant find it ill keep this post updated until i figure it out thanks guys for the probable causes

I just bought a 2001 xj and had this bus code happen to me to. Haven't investagated yet but I noticed if I push on my guauge cluster they usually return to normal. I put about 250 miles on it since I got it and it hasn't been worse than gauges going out.

I had this problem, pulled my gauge cluster out cleaned the connections with electric parts cleaner and a brush and put it back together might have used dielectric grease too. Hasn't come back since. Although my left turn arrow on the dash is permanently illuminated now for some reason.

If that doesn't work, a lot of people say replacing the wire harness connection going to the gauges fixes their problem.

Took me maybe an hour or two to get my gauge connections cleaned up and that fixed it for me so maybe start there.

so far this is what ive found its not all the relays clickin just the ASD relay also my fuel pump is kicking on and staying on i still havent got under the dash yet...

Before-
it would run
i could not automatically shift
no gauges
had to unplug TCM to get the no bus code to go away and i would get code p1698

After Yesterday-
No Start
Cant get no bus code to go away
ASD relay keeps clicking
Fuel pump stays on
i did not change anything that day i tried a new PCM and TCM but did not stick with them because they did the same thing as before i was driving and it died...

I had similar problems. I put in all new grounds and burnished the cluster connections. It helped but I still had erratic gauges and shifting.
My battery was damaged not just weak. I changed it out, tidied up all the power connections I could find and good to go so far.

X2, iffy batteries cause all kinds of strange issues, definitely worth trying.
