It sounds like what you're describing could be cabin resonance noise?
So lets go down that path for now.
Without hearing the noise ourselves, we can only guess as to whats going on or whether its normal noise for these old Jeeps.
Keep in mind these Jeeps are not Cadillacs. Some even refer to them as trucks.

My Jeep has virtually no cabin resonance until i open one side window a certain way with the wind blowing just right, then i get a little air buffeting.
My Jeep Patriot has extreme buffeting and extreme cabin resonance noise on gravel roads.
From what you describe, i suspect it could be exhaust related.

Some basic things to consider for cabin resonance:
Exhaust manifold leak (or exhaust gasket leak), tail pipe leak or exhaust clamp leaks.
Rusted out hole in muffler
Muffler mounted too close to floorboard
Cat converter rusted through
Check the tires for abnormal wear and wheel alignment.
Rusted thin floorboard
Bad wheel bearing
Something loose and vibrating in the engine compartment or elsewhere.

Again without any of us experiencing what you are experiencing its all just shots in the dark.

Glad you got it sorted out!

Don't let a couple smart *** comments deter you from visiting this forum.
This is a great forum for XJ owners. I learned a lot about my Jeep just the few months i've been here.
There's a lot maybe most members here who know their XJs inside and out and more importantly willing to help out.

As with most any public forum, one sometimes needs to have thick skin.
Negative or unproductive comments here are usually very mild, they're the
exception not the rule compared to some other forums i'm on.
The Ford f150forum is one of the worst.

I think because all here have sort of a vintage niche vehicle, there's a good sense of camaraderie among the members.

Look, from what i can tell the OPer is a senior citizen looking for help and felt he was being talked down to.
Apparently you're not a senior citizen... yet.

Why in the hell, if people aren't going to offer help then just don't reply!
There's always gonna be a certain percentage out of the general population to go out of their way to be abrasive and rub some the wrong way as with any public forum.
Human nature.

As i mentioned earlier, this forum is one of the better ones.
There's a ton of info here and the vast majority here really want to share their experiences and knowledge to help others.

I realize this is a public forum and pretty much anything goes within certain limits.
I also realize the more experienced XJ people here can get a little frustrated with newbies.
Without newbies this would be a dead forum.

The below quotes might seem harmless to you but apparently not to the OPer.

So here goes... by all means, put twenty coats of bedliner on your firewall, wrap your exhaust multiple times and duct tape some pillows to your floorboards. It won't cure the root issue, but it will be quiet.
Have a nice day.
Yup.

He earned that comment, and now you've earned this one...

Bite me if you don't like it.

P.s. I'm glad dpanc got his problem squared away.

No muffler wrap or bedliner required even.
