all of my starters that have ever gone bad on any rig worked fine ten minutes before they were bad... try whacking it that usually works and if it doesn't xj's starter are easy to take out just have it tested but I would bet thats the problem

oh and btw disco the battery before you start wrenching or youll be in for a shocking experience... I know I know common sense right? But I watched my buddy do it once and I didnt warn him cuz i wanted him to learn from his dumbness haha

I would check out the relay first.....any starter that went bad on me still made noise.....

would the relay, go back and forth between working and not? where is it located? as far as grounds, you just mean the battery and the starter, obviously? im extremely broke right now, and kinda wishing I had a 5 speed

my starter did the same thing to me today i hit it with a hammer and it started i sprayed the whole started with wd40 and into any holes i could see i then started and restarted a few times in a row and it seemed to fix it for me i had a lot of crud wash out of it when i sprayed it

I would replace that before you hit freezing temps wd40 can and will freeze then youll be stuck

Grounds off the battery to the block/frame. Might as well check starter grounds too cant hurt and its free and easy.

Be careful smacking starter with hammer, you can break magnets inside, then its toast. We used to do this back in the 70s but things were built tougher back then. Hitting starter does work but hit lightly. you can also rock truck in gear to move it off dead spot.
