Default heater questions

So one of the few things we think is very important for a jeep without doors or a roof is a heater. so...

with the dash all apart

this is what it looks like behind my dash.

these ^ metal plates on the front (im opening) and another on top (sits open) are both open/closed by these \/ diaphragms.

a few questions-
  • the right names for these parts?
  • am i right that the plates control where the heat is being pushed?
  • are the diaphragms vacuum, electric, or what?
  • how expensive/ hard is it to get these replaced? considering they are already in the open.
  • is there a way to test these without an engine?
any help would be great, thanks.

I just suck on it to see if the diaphragm is good. They sell a hand vacuum pump with gauge. You can also plug a long tube on a port on your manifold and use that for testing.

Yes, there are vacuum diaphragms that control the flaps.

you should be able to test it by mouth these are called vacuum motors. the arm will move if it is ok,they should not be all that expensive at auto zone but take the part with you more than likely you will run in to some space cadet thinking Chevy made and installed big block 454s in the Cherokee.. but also check the climate Control also some problems occur in the small plastic block with a cluster of different vacuum lines attached to it
