Default heater core help?

2000 sport 117000 miles

here is the back story... I got her last spring and changed the radiator due to a leak. the coolant looked very bad so i did a flush and replaced the t-stat. also took the dash apart and looked at all the vac lines and heater control unit. everything in there is good.

I still have very little heat I am thinking of replacing the heater core.
I know it is a big job but I think I can Handel it.

before I go tearing crap apart I want to do everything else I possibly can and see if it works. so here is some questions?

> what is the best to use for a at home chemical flush?

> Im not overheating but could my water pump be bad? (not getting coolant to the heater core?)

> what else can i do/try before i go big and change the core?

thanks! I need some heat!

Did you flush the heater core when you flushed the radiator? If not, you can try that. I flushed mine like this: Remove both heater hoses where they connect to the engine. Plug the bottom one with a rag or something. Heat up a mixture of 50/50 water and white vinegar in the microwave-just don't boil it. Use a funnel to pour it into the top heat hose then plug it and let it sit 5 minutes or so or just hold the top hose up high for that time. Then unplug the bottom hose and run hot water into the top hose a long time and let it drain a long time. You might see a bunch of crap come out like mine did. Let it run clear a long time. I used a garden hose connected to the utility room sink and ran hot water. Hook it all up and it should be good. Its kind of like cleaning the auto drip coffee machine.

X2 we do this first at my shop be for changing the heater core. We use purple cleaner like super clean let sit for 5 - 10 min and back flush. 75% of the time it works great.

Some suggest CLR, which can be picked up at any hardware store. Its made to clean deposits out of metal fixtures, such as your heater core, so it'd be a great chemical to use that won't tear stuff up. It should be more aggressive than vinegar as well.

Basically you let the CLR sit for ten to fifteen and then rinse with hot water.

I'm highly doubting the OP would try flushing the heater core or anything else he's tried if he's not getting any air through the vents.

I'm guessing if he was having issues with airflow he'd be checking fuses and electrical connections.

Have you checked your heater control valve to make sure it's allowing coolant to flow to the heater core?

If you're smelling coolant, and the windows are fogging, the heater core is bad as you already know.
