98 XJ
Does the A/C lines have to be removed to change out the Heater core?

From everything I've heard, yes.

Unfortunately yes. Your going to have to disassemble the HVAC box two halves. To do that you'll need to remove it from the jeep, and the AC exchanger is in the box as well. My1 piece of advice is to take pictures while disassembling everything, just in case.

What's worse is when you do it, get it all done then the fan doesn't work because you sandwiched it in the HVAC box halves wrong and need to do it all over again. It sucks ***.

Since you have to take the dash apart and break open the ac system anyways - you may want to change the ac evap core as well. I had to do the heater core in my 97 a year ago and I elected to change the evap core while I had it all apart.

I just replaced the heater core on my 98 yesterday, its time consuming but not very difficult, you do have to disconnect the AC lines in order to remove the HVAC box. If you have any questions just let me know, I will try to help you as best I can.
