Default Heater core box switchability?

I have a 96 XJ and was wondering if anyone could confirm if the heater core box from earlier years are compatible. I have access to a 89 I just have to take it out but I don't want to go through all the work
if it's not going to work.
Thanks in advance.

Whats your time worth to you? Pulling a potential 30 year old heater core, to save a few dollars? You could pull the 1989 heater core, to find it corroded or plugged. Then what? Install it & hope for the best? Personally, I'd spend the money for a new one.

This is what I'd install, because it's all metal.

There are cheaper ones out there, if you search afew sites.

I have a new heater core itself. I'm talking about the plastic box that the heater core slides into. The mounting studs broke from the plastic that go through the firewall. I wouldn't put used parts in my Cherokee.
