I have a '95 and I DO have a heater control valve. It is leaking... pretty good too. About a drip every second... no wonder my coolant keeps disappearing.

Could this be why my heat and a/c are not very stong? I feel like my a/c especially used to be much stronger.

Help!
A leaking heater control valve isn't going to affect your air conditioning, but if you don't replace it or eliminate it, the likelihood of it exploding and spewing antifreeze over your engine and causing an overheat is VERY high.

Don't wait. Fix this.

Yeah, I was planning on going to NAPA in the morning. This thread talks about how useless the HCV is and everyone just bypassing it completely... what is its purpose then?

Those valves are totally unnecessary IMHO. I ended up tearing out my whole RENIX cooling system and replacing it bit by bit, with components for a new model. The heater valve was the last item and was the result of a leaking hose near one of the metal lines.
Now, I just have 2 plain hoses going to the heater core and both the A/C and heater work better than before.

97+ doesn't even have a heater control valve, instead only the blend door is used for temperature control.

The HCV is not mandatory but fixing leaks absolutely is
