Default Heater/ ac blower only has high speed

I have a '96 XJ, 4.0. I've owned it for 4 years, everything was working fine with my heat and a/c, then I lost the 2nd and 3rd speeds on my blower. Now it only works on high speed. I have tried several junkyard switches and it still does the same thing. I'm confident 5 or 6 used switches would not all be bad. I've heard talk of a resistor of some sort. Does this sound like it could be the problem. If so, where is this thing and what does it look like? Bear with me, I just found this forum and have more questions coming. Thanks everyone. Thanks to anyone that took interest in this but I found where it is. I had thought maybe I had found it on a junkyard Cherokee but wasn't sure if that was it. A little more searching on here and got my answers. Thanks again

Yes it's the resistor. Located under passenger side dash, behind the glove box

Not sure if a '96 is the same as a '94, but mine has a plastic cover under the passenger side dash, held on with 2 screws, which covers the resistor and one of the heat/AC door motors ( vacuum diaphragms)

If the resistor failed, the blower motor may be drawing more than design current, overloading the resistor....
