Default Heat shield Question?

I ripped off the heatshield at the tailpipe *due to the rattle noise that drove me insane.

My only concern is the gas tank, I dont want to add a heatshield, and i know i can get a gas tank skid but thats too pricey at the moment,

I wondering if I can put some muffler-tailpipe wrap or something to keep it cool

I would think that the weather would cause the wrap to rot. I have my exhaust dumped after the muffler and have no problems with heat.
