Against my better judgement I'm going to yank out my headliner tomorrow, it's making me nuts!
My dilemma is that there is no hard backing for it. I've searched and found that I'm not the only person missing a hard board with a sunroof.
What do other people do? Get a standard one from the JY and cut a hole for the sunroof? Or is there a different method?
More reading has told me that the JY idea won't work because the factory non sr models won't clear the motors & whatnot.... Any ideas?

i have a sunroof too and i would not pull it out if you don't have too. i ended up just covering the bare roof with closed cell foam and putting camo fabric over it. i tried twice with a regular headliner and messed both of them up by not taking my time

I gotta pull mine out. It's cut up and totally screwed... Drug search is my guess...
I'm almost thinking of looking into removing everything except the actual sunroof itself and trying to cover it with a regular headliner.... But I doubt that is possible. Mine is already siliconed shut anyway, and I doubt it works.

Are you sure there isn't a fiber board backing behind the headliner, they are kinda flimsy. That is what the material is glued to. Along with the other upper interior trim, you have to pull off the sun roof trim. If you haven't all ready here is a site with PDF OEM parts catalogs for your year. http://www.xjjeeps.com/
Down load a copy, and look through it. under body trim it shows you the parts used in the sunroof. These are handy because they exploded views of every thing.

Yup, absolutely sure that there is nothing but metal up there. There is a HUGE hole in the headliner and all I can see is wiring and metal.
Thanks for the build link. I'll be sure to check it out.
If I had the resources I'd remove the whole damn thing and have the hole patched... Word to the wise... Don't buy a sunroof Cherokee unless you absolutely MUST have a sunroof.

Here it is with the garbage removed. What a dirty job that was! It was just headliner material that was severely deteriorated. It took me a goo hour to vacuume it when I was done.

i'm actually having the exact same problem, the sunroofs tend to leak and whatnot, so i decided the best thing, since mine is going to mostly be a trail rig one day, Is that I ripped out the sunroof and tray. I'm going to either get the foam board out of another xj without the headliner, and cut around the glass. OR, i will get some foam from a fabric place and make my own, with a little more plush foam.

hello,
I am about to acquire, in France, a Cherokee xj of 1992 limited, with the same sunroof as in the photo,
Is it possible to inquire about its make and model

im going to do the same thing. Find an old board online and then cut out for the glass and replace the fabric. I’ve already ripped out the motor and electrical guts and caulked it shut. However, I still have a leak to look into. I’ll caulk from the inside where I think it’s coming from before I replace the board. Any recommendations to make sure I cut the hole right?
