Default Headlights Quit Working (Flashing on and off)

I have a 1989 xj. Tonight driving home all the sudden my headlights quit working. the would just turn off, and then come back on after a few seconds. I am supposed to be driving it tomorrow over the mt pass to go elk hunting. So any ideas would be nice on how to fix this.

thanks.

I just checked the wires and they are all good.

When i hit the dash right under the headlight switch they will dimm down a little. Maybe it is the switch?

my 99 xj has a bad e-flasher switch. it is mounted on the column and a small bump will throw it off. is it wet? do any of the other gauges act up?

Not wet. I have not been 4x4 in 6 months. The only other guage that acts up is the temp. After i shut the jeep off, it will pin to the hot side and a alarm sound will go off. But if i turn the key to the onn position the temp guage returns to normal.

i wish i knew more about electrical issues... ive heard a few people say they have had to tighten up wire harnesses with shims or e-tape. check to make sure everything is grounded, or sending proper signals with a voltmeter. good luck...

Well unless anyone else has some ideas for me to check, I am just going to take it to the shop in the morning. I am hoping they will be able to diagnose it faster than i can and I can still go hunting this weekend.

My friends 93 XJ is doing this as well. He has checked the bulb fixtures and made sure they are tight. Seems to him like it gets hot and then starts shutting off and then turning on randomly.. Does it take a while to do this or does it intermittently shut off right away? Check burned ground wires or ground connections. Could be the switch. Did you check your fuse under the hood for the entire light system? In his its on the passenger side of the engine bay.. Anyway good luck.. Let me know what you find out.. May help my buddy.
