[QUOTE=Rockville;2091432]Headlights lose brightness (filament evaporation). After 10-12 years brightness goes down about twice.
At about the same time XJ owners begin complain: "Original headlights suck!"
and buy aftermarket headlights and harness, spending time and money.

Anybody has 84XJ with original headlights? They suck! Buy aftermarket!
Could be true about the filaments. But, the fact remains that the factory harness and the way it runs power THROUGH the headlight switch with undersized wire makes it an accident waiting to happen. The switch heats up and the circuit breaker inside it opens turning the lights off. That's with stock lights.
The harness is money well spent for a couple of reasons.
One is that your headlight switch won't be overloaded, heat up, and turn your lights off at night, possibly melting the connector and wires right next to it.
Secondly, you will realize about 30% brighter headlights by just adding the harness, even with stock bulbs. The harness also provides an upgrade path should someone decide to install brighter headlamps in the future.
The harness runs about $33 and takes 1/2 hour to install.
A headlight switch costs about $20 and takes longer to install. And, the new headlight switch is still subject to overload due to the crappy wiring from the factory. Not to mention your lights will be as dim as ever.

I've run fresh wiring and relays from all dash switching including dimmer switch, (man hard to think what AMC original wire harness is still active in the Peep??), as above good grounds are a must! I run Sylvania Silverstar sealed beams, for 4 years 300000Km, excellent white lite, $35 each, poor life (replace each 2X per year). Recently went to Sylvania Xtra vision, I think lite is still excellent, $15 each, too new to tell yet on life cycle.
You can always add accessory lights for those foggy, bushy, or stormy runs.
