Default Headlight Switch Problems - Tail Lights

2.5L 4WD 96 Cherokee SE Manual

I pulled the plunger out of my headlight switch a couple days ago and I just installed a new one, but my running lights and my tail lights aren't working now. There is also no alarm when the headlights are on and the door is open.

If I pull the plunger to just before the running lights position and hold it, the tail lights work and the alarm goes off, but when the headlights are on there is nothing.

I have uninstalled and re-installed it a few times thinking there may have been a bad connection but there has been no change.

Something that concerns me is that on my old switch there was a small metal prong at the back of it with a wire clipped onto it, and on the new switch there are 2 prongs next to the plunger release button instead of the one at the back.

I have no idea how to proceed and any help is appreciated.

So the wire is clipped somewhere to the new switch as well? Could be the new switch is FUBAR.

Besides replacing the switch (which you did), check the connecter that hooks to the switch. They have a tendency to get melted and corroded which causes a lot of problems.

I am jumping on this thread rather than starting a new one as I am having the same issue. Before replacing the switch, running and tail lights worked but no headlights unless high beam indicator was pulled and held back.
I replaced the switch [actually tried two different ones] and the headlights work now, but no running or tail lights.
Never had the door buzzer working so that is the same either way.
Anyone know if I can buy a replacement for the wiring harness that plugs into the switch or maybe just the clip itself?
Any thoughts of where to go from here?
Winter and bad weather coming will be bad news if I am driving without tail lights. Using flashers now in the AM but it is only a matter of time until the PoPo gets me.

Thanks Cruiser,

To the OP, did you check your fuse on the panel down by your feet?
I am not sure why but I thought to swap it out and everything now works.
