Default Head scratching stalling problem

So I've just purchased a 2000 XJ fitted with the 2.5 Td engine , it has numerous small problems which I shall be addressing as time allows . But the first major one is a bit of a head scratcher ....

It starts , drives fine until you take your foot off the accelerator to coast , either on the flat or going downhill .... then the engine cuts out , won't bump start , the only way is to turn the ignition off and restart it , then it will run fine until the next time you have to decelerate again . It does it from cold or hot , in the rain or sun etc .

I scanned it with no faults showing , so then I wondered if it's fitted with an emission control that stops the injectors when decelerating , couldn't confirm this , so disconnected the speed sensor and tried , still the same !

I'm not 100% sure the tank pump is working correctly so that's my next angle of attack unless any of you have a better suggestion .

Thank you in advance
