Hi-

A couple days ago my Cherokee 2.5TD 1999 (owned not 2 weeks) started smoking at idle after a 120 mile motorway trip. Still drove absolutely fine, just white/ blue smoke at the lights.

Took it to a 4x4 'specialist' who found the water system is over pressurised. (However no 'mayonnaise'/ oily water in the head) - which could point to the head/ gaskets.

I drove home very sheepishly, but a mile from my house started a horrible, deathly rattle/ grinding coming from what seems like behind the gear stick/ underside of the engine. So much so that I had to switch it off as it seemed like something was trying to get out. Along with that noise was the smell of rubber/ burning from under the bonnet....

Thing is, the head and various associated gaskets were changed not 9000 miles ago, so it's beggar's belief that could have gone?!

At the moment, it's sat on my drive looking very sorry for itself, with me feeling totally gutted and confused. I'm no expert but not unacquainted with engines. Does anyone know any good Jeep experts in the south of the UK?


Any hints or ideas would be huuuuuge help. I've grown so attached to it I can't bare to sell it for spares.

id start it up again see if it happens. I thought mine had problems with the flex plate i heard a ton of rattling grinding one day under the shifter, turns out it was my exhaust bangin around on a cross member
