Yes new intake/exhaust gasket. All new gaskets from the head up, mine as well do it right the first time.

Agreed. How did you lift the head? With a chain or engine hoist?

A swivel after the (14mm, 9/16, there), then a mile of extension can make that one rear manifold bolt a lot easier. As far as underneath, I'd come back after a few hot/cold cycles and see how tight I got there. (after install). Hope you get good news from the shop!

I'm no source for info on the gear oil. I just buy a pointy bottle that has a 90 on it somewhere.....so far so good.

I recently (this past weekend) took the head off a 98XJ in the JY to put in my 98 that had the valves burnt out from excessive overheating.

This may have been touched on earlier, but I can't stress enough how much planning is required to get that last head bolt off. Not sure if its unique to the 98 model but there is a lip coming off the firewall that is surprisingly strong that has only a few inches of clearance off the top of the bolt. I was barely able to fit a 1/2 drive with the deep socket on when it was tight, and once it was loose it took dual leverage and a complete mangling of the lip to remove the head. If that lip is there you may want to look at cutting it away as it serves no real purpose, just where it overlaps the bolt unless you have a pivoting head ratchet. Even so you might find you need to remove it to put the head bolts back in with an impact, since you'll still have the clearance problem.

After 4 hours in the Texas sun, that thing felt like it weighed about 100 pounds but it probably weighs between 60-80.

I sold my 96 s10 for my Cherokee. To be honest, worst mistake I ever made. My 96 was mint as a brand new penny. But I rushed into this Jeep and do have regrets. IV done nothing but been working on it since I bought it. Now for my 88 Cherokee is why I wanted another xj. I paid $380 for it running perfectly.

Did you torque all of the head and Mongols bolts to spec or just tighten them down? There's a sequence they need to be torqued in order for the metal to connect and seal good. You could try some propane not lit around the intake manifold. It would raise the rpms if it found a leak. Also make sure spark plugs are gapped correctly to .35 if I recall right.
