I have looked all over and get mixed messages here.
I am troubleshooting my blinkers and starting with the obvious I wanted to change out the old flasher and the hazard relay which was missing altogether.
What it does before changing flasher and putting in a hazard relay is that my blinkers work but the dash arrows are blinking simultaneously regardless of prompt direction.( Can’t test the hazard one properly right now since I disassembled the steering column to change the key cylinder). They blinking is slow but ok I guess, and I went over the grounds and sockets but will take one more look.
from what understand the relays are called 550 and 552 and are not identical due to the higher load on the hazard relay (all lights simultaneously)? I got these two on the pictures when ordering from renegadestation.de which seems to be the closest specialist to Sweden, they claim they should work in both slots.
(tldr)
questions;
are the relays for flasher and hazard identical?
the horn is also shot, do you think it’s a faulty turn signal switch situation here?
Both identical 552 relays What I found somewhere else online for 550, looks taller. Out of stock tho.
Interesting. The parts guide does show 2 different part numbers:
J545 2266 FLASHER, Hazzard
3837 161 FLASHER, Turn Signal
Yet Rock Auto show the Standard EFL522 as having both part numbers as interchangeable. The FSM shows only 2 wires used on each on. One gets power from the turn signal sw, the other from the hazard switch. Guess that's why the hazards flash faster?
Adding to the mystery here:
after diving deep under my dash I found one more relay which seems to be added afterwards, taped to a wiring harness. maybe the socket in the fuse panel was shot and they rerouted the flasher wires. one can only speculate. Anyways- this one goes to the turn signals and has three pins. After switching that one to a new one I happened to have, turn signals flashes slightly faster but same problem on the dash.
Bonus flasher relay
So what I can tell is that I have one relay with 2 pins for the hazard and one with 3 pins for the turn signal. However if that one is completely accurate I don’t know. The jeep is a XJ 1990.
